Idaho received its telephone identity early, in 1947, when 208 was assigned as one of the original North American area codes and given jurisdiction over the entire state. For seventy years it remained Idaho's only area code, a rare feat of longevity, before the 986 overlay was approved by the Idaho Public Utilities Commission in 2015 and entered service in November 2016 to relieve number exhaustion. Ten-digit dialing became mandatory statewide in August 2017, completing that transition, and 208 and 986 now serve the same Mountain Time footprint together.
