History & Cultural Notes

Area code 212 was one of the original 86 area codes created by AT&T and the Bell System in 1947, assigned to New York City, and it became shorthand in popular culture for Manhattan itself.

As telephone demand grew through the twentieth century, the numbering plan for the city was split and later overlaid. The boroughs outside Manhattan were separated into area code 718 in 1984, and as the supply of numbers within Manhattan continued to shrink, overlay codes 917 and later 646 were introduced to share the same geographic territory. Today 212 is generally reserved for Manhattan, though callers there may also be assigned 646 or 917 numbers.

  • Financial services centered on Wall Street
  • Media, publishing, and broadcasting
  • Corporate headquarters and legal services
  • Tourism, theater, and the arts

Beyond Manhattan itself, the broader New York metropolitan calling region includes communities such as Jersey City, Yonkers, and parts of Long Island reachable through neighboring codes. The 212 code remains closely tied to Manhattan's identity as a global center of finance, culture, and media.
