Area code 212 was one of the original 86 area codes created by AT&T and the Bell System in 1947, assigned to New York City, and it became shorthand in popular culture for Manhattan itself.
As telephone demand grew through the twentieth century, the numbering plan for the city was split and later overlaid. The boroughs outside Manhattan were separated into area code 718 in 1984, and as the supply of numbers within Manhattan continued to shrink, overlay codes 917 and later 646 were introduced to share the same geographic territory.
