History & Cultural Notes

Anguilla's telephone identity changed on March 31, 1997, when the territory was carved out of the overloaded 809 area code, which had covered numerous Caribbean countries and territories and was running out of capacity. The new code, 264, was reportedly chosen because those digits spell "ANG" on a telephone keypad, a fitting nod to the island's name. Before the switch, Anguilla relied on three-digit local dialing within 809 and even held that plan's only four-digit national number, 4972, before the territory moved to full seven-digit local dialing under its own code.

Beyond the capital, The Valley, service under 264 reaches communities including Blowing Point, Sandy Ground, Island Harbour, West End, and South Hill, tying together a small but active population. The territory's economy centers on a mix of visible and less visible industries:

  • Tourism and hospitality
  • Offshore incorporation and management
  • Offshore banking
  • Captive insurance
  • Fishing

This blend of a visitor-facing hospitality sector alongside offshore financial services and a traditional fishing trade reflects the balance many small island communities strike between global business connections and everyday local life, all served by the same 264 dialing plan.
