Jacksonville's phone numbers stayed simple for nearly six decades before technology caught up with growth. Area code 904 had served the region since July 1965, when it split from area code 305, but by the early 2020s projected exhaustion pushed the Florida Public Service Commission to approve a new overlay, 324, in May 2022. The rollout was staged deliberately: permissive ten-digit dialing began July 31, 2023, mandatory ten-digit dialing followed on January 29, 2024, and the first numbers bearing the new code were assigned starting February 26, 2024.
Local media dubbed the transition "904ever," capturing how residents of Jacksonville, St. Augustine, Fernandina Beach, Orange Park, and Jacksonville Beach held onto their original code's identity even as new lines shifted to 324.
