Manhattan has needed a new area code roughly every couple of decades: 212 in 1947, 646 in 1999, and then 332, which went into service on June 10, 2017, after 212 was projected to run out of numbers by the third quarter of that year. Unlike earlier overlay rollouts elsewhere, 332's introduction required no permissive-dialing transition period, since ten-digit dialing had already been mandatory in the borough since 1992, when the citywide 917 overlay was introduced. The 332 code itself had actually been assigned in advance, back in November 2015.
Manhattan's economy, spanning Midtown, Harlem, Lower Manhattan, the Upper West Side, the Upper East Side, and Washington Heights, remains built around finance, media and publishing, real estate, higher education and research, and tourism and hospitality — the same industries that have long anchored the borough regardless of which area code a given line carries. What has shifted is perception: 212 is still widely regarded as Manhattan's prestige code, a status tied to its original, sole standing before 646 and 332 arrived, though acceptance of the newer codes, particularly for mobile numbers, has grown over time.
As of the 2020 census, the numbering plan's sole geographic area, Manhattan, counted 1,694,251 residents across all four overlaid codes.
