History & Cultural Notes
Western Washington's telephone map was redrawn on January 15, 1995, when area code 360 split off from 206, which had served the entire state since 1947. The new code took over the territory outside the Seattle metro area, stretching from the Vancouver area up through Bellingham near the Canadian border. Along with Alabama's 334, which began service the same day, 360 was one of the first two interchangeable area codes in the North American Numbering Plan to use a middle digit other than 0 or 1, a technical milestone that expanded how area codes could be assigned nationwide.
As demand for numbers grew, the 564 overlay was added on August 28, 2017, layering new numbers over the same 206/360 region and bringing mandatory ten-digit dialing to the area a month earlier, on July 29, 2017. Neighboring codes 206, 253, 425, 509, 503, and 604 border the territory, reflecting its position between Seattle, Portland, and the Canadian border.
The 360 region's economy spans several distinct sectors:
- Technology
- Manufacturing
- Agriculture
- Timber and forestry
- Tourism
Beyond its primary city of Vancouver, the code also serves Bellingham, Olympia, Longview, Bremerton, and Aberdeen, communities that together represent much of western Washington's coastal and inland character outside the immediate Seattle core.
