History & Cultural Notes
Salt Lake City and the surrounding Wasatch Front counties share their telephone numbers between two codes today, a legacy of steady population growth along Utah's most densely settled corridor. The original code, 801, dates to 1947 and once covered the whole state; in 1997 it was pared back to just the Wasatch Front (Davis, Morgan, Salt Lake, Utah, and Weber counties), with the rest of Utah moving to 435. By 2008, conservation measures could no longer keep pace with demand, so 385 was layered on top of 801 as an all-services overlay, entering service on June 1 of that year. A year-long permissive dialing period followed, and by June 2009 ten-digit dialing was mandatory throughout the region.
Beyond Salt Lake City, the numbering plan area reaches Ogden, Provo, Sandy, West Jordan, and Layton, tying together a stretch of the state widely known for hosting the 2002 Winter Olympics. That same corridor has more recently become identified with its technology sector, nicknamed "Silicon Slopes," alongside established strength in finance and banking, healthcare, tourism and outdoor recreation, and manufacturing.
