History & Cultural Notes

Baltimore's numbering plan area, area code 410, entered service on October 6, 1991, carved out of area code 301 to relieve exhaustion driven by growth around Baltimore and the Washington suburbs. The split left 301 covering western and central Maryland while 410 took the Baltimore metropolitan area and the Eastern Shore. Demand kept climbing: area code 443 was added as an overlay in 1997, barely five years after the original split, and a second overlay, 667, followed in 2012 once the combined 410/443 pool approached exhaustion.

Beyond Baltimore itself, the region reaches Annapolis, Columbia, Ellicott City, Glen Burnie, and Towson, and by the 2020 Census the combined 410/443/667 numbering area was home to more than 4.3 million people. The local economy spans several major sectors:

  • Healthcare and biomedical research, anchored by Johns Hopkins
  • Port, shipping, and logistics activity through the Port of Baltimore
  • Defense and aerospace work centered on Aberdeen Proving Ground
  • Finance and insurance
  • Tourism and hospitality around the Inner Harbor

Culturally, the region traces back to Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor, birthplace of the Star-Spangled Banner, while the Eastern Shore's Chesapeake Bay blue crab industry remains central to how the area sees itself.
