416 Area Code – Toronto, Ontario: Location, Time Zone & History

Torontonians know their city by its area code as much as its name: "the 416" is shorthand for Toronto proper, set against the surrounding "905" suburbs, and after a 2001 overlay original 416 numbers became something of a status marker held mainly by long-time residents and businesses. That overlay, Canada's first, introduced mandatory 10-digit dialing and added area code 647; two further overlays followed, 437 in 2013 and 942 in 2025, as the numbering plan kept pace with growth across the Toronto area.

416 dates to 1947, one of the original 86 North American area codes, and originally covered southern Ontario including the Golden Horseshoe. Kitchener and the western portion of that territory split off to form area code 519 in 1953, and the outer Greater Toronto Area, including Mississauga and Brampton, split off as area code 905 in 1993. What remains today is essentially the City of Toronto itself, plus Scarborough, North York, Etobicoke, East York, and York, home to just under 2.8 million people according to the 2021 Census.
