Laval, Longueuil, and the ring of communities surrounding the Island of Montreal share area code 450, which went into service on June 13, 1998 after splitting off from 514 to relieve exhaustion in Montreal's numbering plan. Rather than taking a slice of the island itself, 450 was drawn to encircle it, absorbing the off-island suburbs and the Montérégie region. As demand kept growing, an overlay was layered on top: area code 579 activated August 21, 2010, followed by a third code, 354, on October 22, 2022, giving the region a three-code complex without any further geographic splits.
What makes this arrangement distinctive is its shape. Because 450/579/354 fully surrounds 514, it forms one of the few "doughnut" area code configurations in the North American Numbering Plan, and the only one found in Canada.
