History & Cultural Notes

Area code 579 entered service on August 21, 2010, as an all-services overlay on area code 450, the numbering plan area that has served Montreal's off-island suburbs since June 13, 1998, when it split from area code 514. Rather than dividing the territory again, regulators chose an overlay specifically to spare existing 450 customers the disruption of a second mandatory number change.

The 450/579 complex gained a third layer on October 22, 2022, with the activation of area code 354, completing a numbering plan that now wraps entirely around the island of Montreal. This "doughnut" configuration—surrounding area code 514 on all sides—is one of the few such arrangements in the North American Numbering Plan and the only one in Canada.

The territory served includes Laval, Longueuil, Terrebonne, Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Brossard, and Saint-Hyacinthe—collectively Quebec's most populous suburban belt outside the island of Montreal itself. Its economy spans several sectors:

  • Manufacturing
  • Logistics and transportation
  • Aerospace
  • Agriculture
  • Retail trade

Laval, the primary city in this numbering plan area, functions as an economic extension of Montreal proper, benefiting from the same manufacturing and logistics networks that serve the wider Montérégie region.
