657 Area Code – Anaheim, California: Location, Time Zone & History

The numbering history behind 657 stretches back to 1951, when AT&T split California's original area code 213 to create 714 for Orange County and parts of Los Angeles, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties. As Southern California's population and mobile phone use grew, 714 was trimmed once already: in 1998 the southern part of Orange County broke away to form area code 949, leaving 714 to cover only the northern county. By 2007 even that reduced territory was running out of central-office prefixes, and the California Public Utilities Commission approved an all-services overlay rather than another geographic split.

657 went into service on September 23, 2008, layered directly on top of 714's existing footprint. Because it is an overlay, no phone number had to change — existing 714 lines kept their area code, while new lines in the same territory were issued 657 numbers, and ten-digit local dialing became mandatory across both codes. The shared plan area covers Anaheim, Santa Ana, Fullerton, and Garden Grove, along with Orange, Buena Park, Costa Mesa, Cypress, and a small slice of Chino Hills.

Demand has kept pace with relief efforts: a March 2025 CPUC filing projects the 657/714 supply will exhaust by March 2027, and NANPA has already requested approval for a third overlay code for the region. The area's economy leans on tourism and hospitality anchored by the Disneyland Resort and Knott's Berry Farm, convention business at the Anaheim Convention Center, and healthcare and higher education tied to CSU Fullerton.
