Jamaica's telephone numbering plan carries a single area code, 876, across the entire island, and by the mid-2010s it needed relief. The Office of Utilities Regulation approved an overlay code, 658, in 2016, and it entered service on April 30, 2019, with ten-digit local dialing made mandatory a month earlier to prepare for the change.
