History & Cultural Notes

When the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands joined the North American Numbering Plan on July 1, 1997, it received area code 670, replacing the ITU international country code that mainland callers had previously dialed to reach the islands. A permissive dialing period ran until July 1, 1998, after which calls between the CNMI and the rest of the NANP were treated as domestic by the FCC rather than international.

Saipan, the commonwealth's primary and largest city, is home to roughly 90% of the population and hosts the CNMI's legislative and executive branches at Capitol Hill. The territory also includes Tinian and Rota, both served under the same code. The islands run on Chamorro Time, and within the CNMI, seven-digit local dialing remains standard, while calls to and from other NANP regions require the full 1+10-digit format.

  • Tourism, historically drawing a majority-Japanese visitor base before shifting toward Chinese and Korean travelers
  • Garment manufacturing, once employing about 12,000 workers and shipping over $1 billion in duty-free goods to the U.S. mainland in 1998, though the industry has largely closed since
  • Government services tied to the commonwealth's administration
