682 Area Code – Fort Worth, Texas: Location, Time Zone & History

Fort Worth anchors the western half of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, and its telephone numbering reflects the area's rapid growth over the past century. The original code serving the city, 817, was created in 1953 when it was split off mostly from area code 915, one of Texas's original 1947 area codes. As demand for phone numbers grew, area code 682 was added as an all-services overlay on 817, effective October 7, 2000, relieving number exhaustion without dividing the region geographically.

Because 682 shares the exact same service territory as 817 rather than covering a distinct area, all local calls across the combined complex require ten-digit dialing. The plan area extends well beyond Fort Worth to Arlington, Grand Prairie, Grapevine, Mansfield, Burleson, Cleburne, Granbury, and Weatherford. Some eastern Tarrant County communities near Dallas, including Arlington, Bedford, Euless, Grapevine, Southlake, and Colleyville, can also carry Dallas-complex numbers, underscoring how the Fort Worth and Dallas numbering territories overlap.
