684 Area Code – Pago Pago, American Samoa: Location, Time Zone & History

American Samoa holds a distinction unique among all North American Numbering Plan territories: it is the only NANP area located entirely south of the equator. Its numbering plan area spans seven islands, Tutuila, Aunu'u, Ofu, Olosega, Ta'u, Swains Island, and Rose Atoll, and it remains on Samoa Standard Time year-round, never having shifted across the International Date Line the way independent Samoa did in 2011.

The territory's admission to the North American Numbering Plan was authorized by the FCC on December 24, 2002. Area code 684, which had previously served as American Samoa's ITU country code, was formally assigned on January 24, 2003, and installed for service on October 2, 2004, when a six-month permissive dialing period began and central office codes became available to order. Within the plan area, all calls are treated as local, dialed as seven digits or with a leading 0 plus the area code.

Beyond Pago Pago, the primary city, the territory includes Tafuna, its largest city, along with Ofu, Olosega, Ta'u, Leone, Fagatogo, and Nu'uuli. The local economy centers on tuna canning, territorial government, and fishing; StarKist's cannery in Pago Pago has long stood as the territory's largest private employer, historically providing work for thousands of local residents.
