When AT&T assigned the original 86 North American area codes in October 1947, 703 was given to the entire Commonwealth of Virginia. That single code did not last: the eastern portion of the state split off as 804 in 1973, and in 1995 the western portion followed, becoming 540. What remained was Northern Virginia -- the territory 703 still covers today, seven decades on.
