History & Cultural Notes
Unlike most area codes, 769 covers no territory of its own -- it is an overlay laid directly on top of area code 601, sharing the exact same numbering plan area across central and southern Mississippi rather than splitting off separate cities. Put into service on March 14, 2005, it became Mississippi's first overlay complex, introduced to relieve exhaustion in the 601 numbering pool and requiring mandatory ten-digit dialing across the shared territory.
That shared footprint took its current shape through two earlier splits: in 1997 area code 228 was carved out for the Gulf Coast counties around Gulfport, Biloxi, and Pascagoula, and in 1999 area code 662 was split off to serve northern Mississippi, leaving 601 to cover only the central and southern part of the state that 769 would eventually overlay.
- Jackson, the state capital and largest city, anchors the 601/769 area and was historically central to Mississippi's civil rights movement.
- The region's economy leans on state government, healthcare, manufacturing, agriculture and forestry, and higher education.
- Natchez, one of the oldest European settlements on the Mississippi River, is known for its antebellum architecture.
- The combined 601/769 population served is about 1.42 million, per the 2020 Census.
