History & Cultural Notes
Area code 781 was carved out of Boston's original 617 on September 1, 1997, taking the inner suburbs along the Route 128 corridor and the outer South Shore, with mandatory use beginning the following February. Route 128 itself, the highway forming the spine of the 781 territory, was dubbed "America's Technology Highway" during the minicomputer boom of the 1960s through 1980s and was even briefly signposted with that name in 1982.
Growth along the corridor pushed 781 toward exhaustion within a few years, and Massachusetts regulators approved an all-services overlay, area code 339, activated for new numbers on May 2, 2001. The two codes now share the same suburbs, from Waltham and Woburn to Dedham and Weymouth, without any subscriber having had to change numbers.
The area's identity runs through both technology and history: defense contractor Raytheon was headquartered in Waltham and later Lexington for decades before leaving Massachusetts in 2022, while Lexington itself is where the American Revolutionary War's opening battle was fought on April 19, 1775. Biotechnology, aerospace and higher education round out an economy still shaped by that same 128 corridor.
