Puerto Rico spent decades sharing the Caribbean's 809 numbering plan area with other island nations before 787 was carved out as its own code, entering service March 1, 1996. Unlike most U.S. jurisdictions, Puerto Rico has never been geographically split -- 787 covers the entire island, from San Juan to Ponce, Mayagüez, Caguas, and Arecibo. Rapid growth in cell phones and dial-up internet burned through the new supply quickly, and by September 15, 2001, the 939 overlay went into service alongside mandatory ten-digit dialing.
San Juan's financial district and a large pharmaceutical and biotech manufacturing base anchor the local economy, alongside tourism and government administration. Old San Juan, founded by Spanish colonists in 1521, is one of the oldest cities under U.S. jurisdiction, and its Spanish colonial fortifications, including Castillo San Felipe del Morro, hold UNESCO World Heritage status.
