809 Area Code – Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic: Location, Time Zone & History

Area code 809 is the original numbering plan area for the Dominican Republic, assigned in 1958 when it began as a shared North American Numbering Plan territory anchored on Puerto Rico and expanding across much of the Caribbean and Bermuda. Through the 1990s that shared territory dissolved: Bermuda split off in November 1994, the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, and Barbados followed in 1995, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines was the last to leave, by 1999 -- after which 809 belonged exclusively to the Dominican Republic.

Rather than splitting further as the country's phone numbers filled up, the Dominican Republic instead added overlays: area code 829 arrived in 2005, and 849 followed in 2009, together forming the 809/829/849 complex that now covers the entire nation from Santo Domingo to the Punta Cana and Puerto Plata resort zones. Tourism, sugar and cacao agriculture, gold mining, free-trade-zone manufacturing, and remittances from the Dominican diaspora all sustain the economy today.

Santo Domingo's Zona Colonial, the first permanent European settlement in the Americas, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the country is the birthplace of both merengue and bachata music. Baseball is the national sport, with the Dominican Republic producing an outsized share of Major League talent, particularly from San Pedro de Macoris.
