History & Cultural Notes

Area code 904 entered service July 11, 1965, split from area code 305 to cover all of northern Florida from the Panhandle through Jacksonville and Ocala. A string of later splits steadily narrowed its territory: 407 broke away in 1988, 352 in 1995, 850 in 1997, and 386 in 2001, until 904 settled into its present footprint around Jacksonville and the northeast Florida coast.

The region's numbers finally caught up with growth in 2024, when the Florida Public Service Commission's approved overlay, area code 324, went into effect -- permissive ten-digit dialing began July 31, 2023, mandatory dialing followed January 29, 2024, and the first 324 numbers were assigned that February. Jacksonville, the largest city by land area in the contiguous United States following its 1968 consolidation with Duval County, remains both the primary and largest city of the 904/324 numbering plan area.

  • Banking and financial services anchor the local economy
  • JAXPORT drives port and logistics activity
  • Naval Station Mayport and NAS Jacksonville house one of the East Coast's largest concentrations of military personnel

When the overlay launched, local media coined the phrase "904ever," capturing how strongly residents identify with the original code even as 324 numbers began arriving alongside it.
