Central New Jersey's 908 traces back to June 1989, when it was announced as a split from the original northern New Jersey area code 201, entering service November 1, 1990. A permissive dialing period let residents adjust before 908 became mandatory on June 8, 1991, by which point it carried roughly 1.5 million access lines across Union, Somerset, Hunterdon, Warren, and parts of Middlesex and Morris counties.
