History & Cultural Notes
Long before it became 934, Suffolk County's telephone history moved through several area codes. The whole of Nassau, Suffolk and the lower Hudson Valley started out under 914 in 1947, then Nassau and Suffolk split away into their own numbering plan area as 516 in 1951, and Suffolk County alone was carved out again as 631 in 1999. Growth continued, and NANPA projected that central office codes in the 631 territory would run out by the third quarter of 2016.
The response was an all-services overlay rather than another split: 934 entered service on July 16, 2016, following mandatory 10-digit local dialing that began June 18 of that year. It was notable as the first overlay anywhere in New York State outside New York City, layered across Suffolk County towns from Babylon and Huntington to Riverhead, Southampton and East Hampton -- existing 631 numbers stayed put while new lines received 934.
Suffolk County's identity spans both ends of the economic spectrum: Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton has produced multiple Nobel Prize-winning physics discoveries, while the Hamptons on the South Fork remain synonymous with seaside summer tourism and celebrity vacationers.
