937 Area Code – Dayton, Ohio: Location, Time Zone & History

937 came into being on September 28, 1996, when it split off from area code 513 and took the northern and eastern half of that original 1947 territory -- Dayton, Springfield and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base -- while Cincinnati held on to 513. Continued growth pushed the region toward another shortage of central office codes, and the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio responded with an all-services overlay rather than a further split: area code 326 entered service March 8, 2020, after mandatory 10-digit local dialing took effect that February, forming the 937/326 complex that stands today.

Dayton's identity runs deep with aviation history, as hometown to Wilbur and Orville Wright, who designed and tested their early aircraft there, and the region remains anchored by Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, one of the largest and most technologically significant installations in the Air Force. Wright State University and the University of Dayton add a strong higher-education presence, and the numbering plan area also reaches Springfield, Kettering, Beavercreek, Huber Heights and Fairborn.
