941 Area Code – Sarasota, Florida: Location, Time Zone & History

Florida's Gulf Coast peninsula outgrew a single area code long ago. 941 entered service May 28, 1995, carved out of area code 813 to relieve its exhausted central office code supply, taking in Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte, and what were then the future Heartland counties along the southern Tampa Bay coastline.

The territory kept shrinking as growth continued: 863 split off in 1999 to take the inland Heartland counties of Polk, Hardee, Highlands, Glades, Hendry, and most of DeSoto and Okeechobee, and 239 split off in 2002 to take the southern Lee and Collier county territory. What remained is today's 941 footprint of Manatee, Sarasota, and Charlotte counties, with Sarasota as the primary city and North Port, though less internationally known, now its largest.

Sarasota's identity is inseparable from the arts and leisure economy that grew up along its beaches. The Ringling, the estate and art museum of circus magnate John Ringling, recalls the city's history as the winter home of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, while Siesta Key Beach is repeatedly ranked among the best beaches in the country for its fine quartz sand. Farther south, Punta Gorda and Port Charlotte anchor the numbering plan area along the Peace River and Charlotte Harbor, rounding out a region built on tourism, healthcare, and marine trades.
