History & Cultural Notes

Dallas already carried three area codes -- 214, 469, and 972 -- by the time planners needed a fourth. 945 was activated January 15, 2021 as the newest all-services overlay layered onto that same combined numbering plan area, a response to projected exhaustion of central office codes across the metroplex rather than a new geographic split.

Because it is an overlay and not a split, 945 shares its entire footprint with 214, 469, and 972, reaching Dallas itself along with Highland Park, University Park, and Garland. Neighboring numbering plan areas ring the complex: 817 to the west, 903 to the northeast, 940 to the north, and 254 to the south.

945's identity is inseparable from the metroplex it overlays -- there is no separately branded "945 community" the way an older split code might claim; instead it is simply the latest layer of dialing capacity for a numbering plan area that has been subdividing and overlaying for decades. Its introduction meant new lines in the Dallas area, regardless of city, could be issued a 945 number alongside any of its three predecessors.
