986 Area Code – Boise, Idaho: Location, Time Zone & History

Idaho went nearly seven decades on a single area code before area code 986 arrived. The state's original 208, one of the 86 area codes assigned nationwide in 1947, covered all of Idaho until numbering exhaustion led NANPA to overlay it with 986 rather than split it geographically, preserving every existing subscriber's 208 number. The overlay entered service November 5, 2016, and mandatory ten-digit local dialing followed on August 5, 2017, completing the transition across the shared 208/986 numbering plan area.

Because the overlay is statewide, the 208/986 footprint stretches from Boise, Meridian, and Nampa in the southwest to Idaho Falls and Pocatello in the east, Coeur d'Alene in the northern Panhandle, and Twin Falls in the south. Boise is home to Micron Technology, the only U.S.-based memory-chip manufacturer, and to Hewlett Packard Enterprise operations, while J.R. Simplot Company anchors the state's potato-processing industry -- fitting for the nation's top potato-producing state, whose farms also raise dairy cattle across the south and east.

Beyond its tech and agricultural base, the region draws outdoor recreation to Sun Valley, the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, and the lakes around Coeur d'Alene. The numbering plan area even spans two time zones, with the Panhandle on Pacific Time while most of the state, including Boise, runs on Mountain Time.
