Area code 216 was among the original 86 area codes established in 1947, originally spanning northeastern Ohio from Lorain to Youngstown. In its early decades it covered a much larger footprint than it does today, reflecting the region's importance in the early Direct Distance Dialing system.
As telephone demand grew, 216 was divided twice. In 1996 the southern portion, including Akron, Canton, and the Youngstown area, split off to form area code 330. The following year, in 1997, the eastern and western suburban portions separated to form area code 440, narrowing 216 to Cleveland and the inner-ring suburbs of Cuyahoga County. These successive splits trace the growth and reorganization of telecommunications infrastructure across the Cleveland metropolitan area over half a century.
Today the code serves Cleveland, Lakewood, Shaker Heights, and Parma, communities within Cuyahoga County. Despite serving a major urban area, it has never been overlaid, and cited projections suggest relief will not be needed until 2046. The region's economy reflects a diverse mix of sectors:
