History & Cultural Notes

Outer Greater Cleveland got its own identity on the phone network on August 16, 1997, when it split away from area code 216 — itself already reduced the year before, in 1996, when its southern portion became 330. The new code, 440, took in Lorain, the Lake Erie shoreline counties, and the outer suburban ring, while 216 kept Cleveland proper and the inner-ring Cuyahoga County suburbs.

What makes 440 distinctive is its shape: rather than being anchored by one downtown, it's the largest-population area code in Ohio built instead around a ring of suburbs and satellite cities strung along Lake Erie, including Parma, Lorain, Elyria, Mentor, Strongsville, and Westlake. Its economy is correspondingly broad, spanning healthcare, manufacturing, logistics and distribution, retail, and higher education.

Growth eventually caught up with the region. On March 1, 2024, area code 436 was activated as an all-services overlay on 440 to relieve number exhaustion, bringing mandatory 10-digit local dialing to the combined numbering plan area.
