History & Cultural Notes
New Castle, Lawrence County's seat, is nicknamed the "Fireworks Capital of America" thanks to Zambelli Fireworks and Pyrotecnico, both headquartered there since the early 1900s -- and it sits at the heart of area code 724. The code was created on February 1, 1998 by splitting off everything outside Allegheny County from area code 412, one of the original 86 area codes assigned in 1947, which reduced 412 to a Pittsburgh-only enclave surrounded by the new 724 ring.
Growth in the Pittsburgh suburbs and rural western Pennsylvania soon required more relief: area code 878 entered service August 17, 2001 as an all-services overlay spanning both 412 and 724, bringing mandatory ten-digit dialing to the whole southwestern corner of the state, with the first 878 numbers issued within the 724 territory in April 2013 once its own central office codes ran out.
Beyond New Castle, 724 reaches Washington, Greensburg, Butler, Indiana, Uniontown, Sharon, and Cranberry Township, a region shaped by Marcellus Shale natural gas production in Washington and Greene counties, UPMC and Independence Health System hospitals, and universities including Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Slippery Rock University. Washington County also carries older history as a center of the 1791-1794 Whiskey Rebellion, the first major tax protest under the federal government.
