History & Cultural Notes
Northwest Indiana's telephone identity traces back to 1948, when the original 317 code was scaled down to central Indiana and the northern third of the state, including Gary, Hammond, South Bend, and Fort Wayne, was assigned the new 219 code. That broad territory did not last: in 2002 it was divided into three separate codes, with the South Bend area becoming 574 and the Fort Wayne area becoming 260, while the Gary-Hammond region kept 219 following a random drawing.
The area's economy has long been anchored in heavy industry, particularly steel manufacturing and oil refining, alongside transportation and logistics tied to its position near Chicago. Agriculture and casino and gaming also contribute to the regional economy. Beyond Gary and Hammond, the numbering plan area serves several other communities, including:
- East Chicago
- Merrillville
- Valparaiso
- Michigan City
Gary itself was founded in 1906 by U.S. Steel as a company town built around what was once the world's largest steel mill. The city also holds cultural significance as the birthplace of Michael Jackson and his siblings, the Jackson 5; their father worked as a crane operator at the U.S. Steel mill. Since 2021, callers within the 219 numbering plan area have used mandatory 10-digit local dialing, a change made to accommodate the national 988 code.
