Area code 815 is a 1947 original, one of the first 86 assigned by AT&T, and it once covered essentially all of northern Illinois outside Chicago. That territory shrank in September 1956 when the western half, including the Illinois side of the Quad Cities, was folded into a new code, 309, alongside the northern part of 217 -- leaving 815 with the footprint it holds today around Rockford, Joliet, and DeKalb.
Rather than split again as demand grew, NANPA assigned 779 in 2004 as a future overlay; mandatory ten-digit dialing arrived in February 2007, and 779 went live the following month, becoming Illinois's first overlay implemented without a companion split.
The two anchor cities tell different stories. Rockford earned the nickname "Screw Capital of the World" for a precision-fastener industry that grew out of its 19th-century furniture trade, and the region remains Illinois's largest center of aerospace-manufacturing employment, with Collins Aerospace and Woodward among its major employers. Joliet, meanwhile, edged past Rockford in the 2020 Census to become Illinois's third-largest city, its economy increasingly built on intermodal freight hubs along I-80 and I-55.
