262 Area Code – Waukesha, Wisconsin: Location, Time Zone & History

Southeastern Wisconsin's telephone geography was redrawn twice in a few years: in 1997 code 920 was carved from 414 for the Green Bay area, and when 414 still ran short of numbers amid the era's cellphone and pager boom, regulators split off area code 262 on September 25, 1999, covering nearly all of the remaining 414 territory outside Milwaukee County. An overlay was considered but set aside because of resistance to mandatory ten-digit dialing, a requirement that eventually arrived anyway in October 2021, timed to the nationwide rollout of the 988 crisis line.

The region served by 262 blends suburban office corridors with a strong manufacturing identity. Waukesha anchors the numbering plan area, while Kenosha, Racine, West Bend, Brookfield, and Lake Geneva round out its mix of industrial cities and lakeside communities. Key industries include:
