History & Cultural Notes

Milwaukee's brewing heritage and area code 414 are closely intertwined with the city's identity as "Brew City," home to Miller, Pabst, and Schlitz, and the birthplace and continuing headquarters of Harley-Davidson. Manufacturing, brewing and food and beverage production, healthcare, finance and insurance, and tourism form the backbone of the local economy today.

414 was among the original 86 area codes assigned in October 1947, initially covering most of southern and eastern Wisconsin. Its territory has narrowed considerably since: western Wisconsin, including Madison, split off to form area code 608 in 1955; Green Bay and the Fox River Valley split off as area code 920 in 1997; and in 1999 nearly all of the remaining territory outside Milwaukee County split off as area code 262, leaving 414 covering essentially just Milwaukee County plus small slivers of Waukesha and Washington counties.

Today the code reaches Milwaukee, Wauwatosa, West Allis, South Milwaukee, Oak Creek, and Cudahy, a population the 2020 Census put at roughly 939,000 for Milwaukee County.
