History & Cultural Notes

Area code 920 entered service on July 26, 1997, carved out of area code 414 to cover northeastern Wisconsin's Fox River Valley, including Green Bay, Appleton, Oshkosh, Fond du Lac, Sheboygan, and Manitowoc. Cellphone and pager demand in the mid-1990s pushed 414 to need relief again just two years after the 262 split was already in the works.

Wisconsin residents had a ready-made mnemonic for the new code: it matched the jersey number, 92, of beloved Green Bay Packers defensive end Reggie White, with a trailing zero added. An overlay, 274, was approved by state regulators back in 2008 but deferred repeatedly for fifteen years before finally entering service on May 5, 2023.

The region's economy leans on paper and pulp manufacturing, food and beverage processing, and advanced manufacturing, and Green Bay has long been nicknamed the "Toilet Paper Capital of the World" for its concentration of paper mills. It also holds the distinction of being the smallest U.S. media market with a major-league sports franchise, thanks to the Packers, whose home stands within the 920 territory itself.
