History & Cultural Notes

Illinois received area code 217 in 1947, when it was one of the original 86 area codes established across North America. At the time it covered a much larger stretch of the state than it does today. As telephone demand grew, the numbering plan area was trimmed twice: in 1951 the southern Metro East section near St. Louis was reassigned to area code 618, and in 1956 the northern territory around Peoria and Bloomington-Normal split off to become area code 309. These boundary changes reflect how the region's population and telephone use shifted over the decades, requiring the numbering plan to be redrawn to keep pace. More recently, growing demand led the Illinois Commerce Commission to approve an all-services overlay, area code 447, in 2007; it was implemented in 2021, with permissive 10-digit dialing starting in 2020 ahead of the mandatory switch.

Springfield, the area's primary city, was home to Abraham Lincoln from 1837 to 1861 and is now the site of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, which opened in 2005. Champaign-Urbana, also served by 217, is known for the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, a major public research university. Other cities in the region include Decatur, Danville, and Quincy.

The 217/447 area spans a mix of industries, including:

  • State government and public administration
  • Health care
  • Higher education and research
  • Insurance
  • Agriculture
