History & Cultural Notes
Area code 618 is one of the original North American Numbering Plan codes, assigned in 1947 to cover southern Illinois. Its territory grew in 1954, when a boundary revision moved most of the Metro East St. Louis region out of area code 217 and into 618, bringing East St. Louis and Belleville together with the wider southern Illinois numbering area under one code. The plan kept evolving decades later: mandatory ten-digit local dialing took effect October 24, 2021, a shift tied to freeing the 988 code for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, and on July 7, 2023 area code 730 went into service as an all-services overlay of 618, making it the last Illinois region to move to an overlay arrangement.
Beyond Belleville and East St. Louis, the numbering area extends to Carbondale, Alton, Granite City, Edwardsville, Collinsville, and Marion. Its economy rests on several pillars:
- Scott Air Force Base, a logistics and transport hub and the region's largest employer
- Southern Illinois University's Carbondale and Edwardsville campuses
- Manufacturing, agriculture, and healthcare
Collinsville, served by 618, is also home to Cahokia Mounds, a UNESCO World Heritage Site preserving the largest prehistoric earthworks in the Americas, adding a layer of historical depth to a region otherwise defined by its logistics and academic institutions.
