For more than fifty years, a single area code covered the entire Commonwealth of Kentucky, a numbering plan dating back to 1947. That plan finally gave way in 1999, when the western and south-central counties split off from area code 502 to form 270. As wireless phones and business lines multiplied faster than a second split could comfortably absorb, regulators chose a different fix: rather than dividing the territory again, they layered a new overlay code, 364, onto the same region in 2014, after projections showed 270 numbers would run out by early that year. The overlay made ten-digit dialing mandatory for every local call, a shift that mirrored a broader national move away from repeated geographic splits.

This numbering plan area is home to roughly 1.25 million people across 46 counties, sitting mostly in the Central time zone, though a tier of counties along its southern edge observes Eastern time instead.
