859 Area Code – Lexington, Kentucky: Location, Time Zone & History

Area code 859 was carved out of the northwestern portion of area code 606 -- Kentucky's original eastern-half numbering plan dating back to a 1954 split of statewide code 502 -- and took Lexington and Northern Kentucky, roughly two-thirds of 606's population. The Kentucky Public Service Commission approved the split in 1999, and 859 entered service on April 1, 2000, becoming the 277th area code activated in the North American Numbering Plan.

The new code was chosen partly because 859 spells "UKY" on a telephone keypad, a nod to the University of Kentucky in Lexington. Meanwhile poorer, rural Eastern Kentucky was allowed to keep the familiar 606 code so it wouldn't bear the cost of renumbering. In 2021, mandatory 10-digit local dialing took effect across 859 and neighboring 513 in Ohio, tied to the nationwide reservation of 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

Lexington anchors the Bluegrass region as the "Horse Capital of the World," home to Thoroughbred breeding farms, the Kentucky Horse Park, and Keeneland racetrack. Northern Kentucky cities like Covington and Florence sit across the Ohio River from Cincinnati, tying 859 into that metro area through 513. The territory also covers:
