Southern Indiana's numbering history is unusually stable: area code 812 was one of just two codes AT&T handed the state in October 1947, taking the southern third while 317 covered the north. Unlike most original-era codes, 812 was never geographically split -- it kept its 1947 boundaries for nearly seven decades, relieving growth instead with the 930 all-services overlay, whose first numbers reached carriers on March 7, 2015, after mandatory ten-digit dialing began that February.

The territory stretches from Evansville and its Ohio River crossings up through Bloomington, Terre Haute, Columbus, and Jeffersonville, a footprint the 2020 Census put at roughly 1.83 million people across 40 counties.
