History & Cultural Notes

Area code 931 traces its shape to a single day, September 15, 1997, when it split away from area code 615 and took a horseshoe-shaped ring of 28 Middle Tennessee counties wrapped around, but not including, the Nashville metro core that 615 kept for itself. Permissive dialing of old 615 numbers within the new 931 territory lasted until January 15, 1998, before the split became final. Unlike many of its neighbors, 931 has never taken on an overlay -- it remains a straightforward geographic split more than two decades on.

The region it covers is a mix of military, higher education and small-town Tennessee character, stretching from Clarksville through Columbia, Cookeville, Tullahoma and Fayetteville. Fort Campbell, home to the Army's 101st Airborne Division, straddles the Tennessee-Kentucky line near Clarksville, while Austin Peay State University and Tennessee Technological University anchor the region's colleges.

Beyond the military and academic footprint, 931 carries a distinct cultural identity: Lynchburg's Jack Daniel's Distillery, the oldest registered distillery in the country, sits within its borders, and World War I Medal of Honor recipient Sergeant Alvin C. York was born and is buried in Fentress County, also inside the 931 region.
