History & Cultural Notes

Nashville's identity as "Music City" is inseparable from the area code that serves it. Area code 615 went into service in a 1954 flash-cut, taking over most of Tennessee from the original statewide code 901 and leaving 901 to Memphis and the western third of the state. Home to the Grand Ole Opry and the country music recording industry, Nashville anchors a numbering plan area that also reaches Murfreesboro, Franklin, Brentwood, and Hendersonville.

The territory narrowed considerably over time. Area code 423 split off in 1995, taking the eastern portion of the state, including Chattanooga, Knoxville, and the Tri-Cities, and area code 931 followed in 1997, taking a horseshoe-shaped ring of Middle Tennessee and reducing 615 to the Nashville metropolitan core. As numbers ran short again, area code 629 was approved in 2013 and put into service as an overlay in 2015, with mandatory ten-digit dialing arriving that February.

Music aside, Nashville has grown into a major U.S. healthcare hub, hosting the headquarters of HCA Healthcare, founded there in 1968, along with numerous other hospital-management and health-system companies. Higher education, tourism and hospitality, and automotive and advanced manufacturing round out the local economy.
