History & Cultural Notes

Northern Alabama's numbering plan traces back to March 23, 1998, when the region was carved out of area code 205, which had served the entire state since 1947. Callers in Huntsville, Decatur, Gadsden, Florence, and Anniston were given a permissive dialing window before the old 205 pattern stopped working in the new territory on September 28, 1998, allowing phone customers and businesses time to update their printed materials and equipment.

As demand for phone numbers grew alongside the region's expanding population, a second layer was added: the 938 overlay went into service in 2010. Ten-digit dialing became mandatory across the area by June 5 of that year, and new lines began drawing from 938 starting July 10, marking a shift from the simpler seven-digit habits of earlier decades to the all-digit format now standard for the numbering plan area.

That technological trajectory mirrors the region's broader identity. Huntsville earned the nickname "Rocket City" after Wernher von Braun's rocket team arrived at Redstone Arsenal in 1950 to develop the Jupiter and Redstone rockets, and NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center remains a defining presence. The local economy today spans several sectors:

  • Aerospace and defense
  • Biotechnology
  • Software and information technology
  • Healthcare and manufacturing
