History & Cultural Notes

Area code 706 traces an unusual horseshoe around metro Atlanta, wrapping northern and west-central Georgia into three geographically disconnected pieces. It split off from area code 404 on May 3, 1992, after 404 had covered the entire state since 1947; some southern exurbs initially placed in 706 were returned to 404 shortly afterward at residents' request.

As central-office prefixes in the horseshoe territory approached exhaustion, the Georgia Public Service Commission authorized an overlay, and area code 762 began permissive dialing on September 3, 2005, followed by mandatory ten-digit local dialing across the combined 706/762 region on April 1, 2007.

The 706/762 footprint mixes military installations -- Fort Benning near Columbus and Fort Gordon's Army Cyber Center of Excellence near Augusta -- with Augusta National Golf Club, host of the Masters Tournament every April. Dalton, known as the "Carpet Capital of the World," produces the bulk of American carpet manufacturing, while Athens, home to the University of Georgia, helped launch bands like R.E.M. and the B-52's onto the national music scene.
