334 Area Code – Montgomery, Alabama: Location, Time Zone & History

In December 1955, Rosa Parks' arrest in Montgomery triggered a bus boycott that reshaped the country's civil rights movement, and a decade later the Selma-to-Montgomery marches brought an estimated 25,000 people to the steps of the state capitol, helping secure passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Montgomery has carried area code 334 since January 15, 1995, when it split from area code 205 as Alabama's first interchangeable NPA code, one whose middle digit was not 0 or 1. Six years later, in 2001, the region's southwestern reaches around Mobile were carved out to form area code 251, leaving 334 centered on southeastern Alabama.

Today the numbering plan area serves roughly 1.35 million people across 32 counties, including Dothan, Auburn, Phenix City, Prattville and Opelika alongside Montgomery. Its economy blends state government and military employment anchored by Maxwell Air Force Base with automotive manufacturing at Hyundai's Alabama plant, healthcare, agriculture such as cotton, peanuts and soybeans, and higher education centered on Auburn University.
