850 Area Code – Tallahassee, Florida: Location, Time Zone & History

Area code 850 was carved out of area code 904 in 1997, taking in the entire Florida Panhandle from the Alabama border to the Apalachicola River -- Pensacola, Panama City, and the state capital of Tallahassee. Permissive dialing began June 23, 1997, with mandatory dialing following on March 23, 1998.

By 2021, growth across the Panhandle had exhausted 850's supply of central office codes, and the all-services overlay 448 was approved to relieve it; ten-digit dialing became mandatory that May, with 448 numbers entering service June 22, 2021. Unusually, the numbering plan area itself straddles two time zones: Pensacola and Panama City run on Central Time, while Tallahassee and the eastern counties observe Eastern Time, the split falling roughly along the Apalachicola River.

Tallahassee anchors state government along with Florida State University and Florida A&M University, while the coast supports military and defense installations, commercial fishing, and a tourism economy built on the beaches around Destin and Fort Walton Beach.
