864 Area Code – Greenville, South Carolina: Location, Time Zone & History

For 48 years, area code 803 served the entire state of South Carolina. That changed on December 3, 1995, when Upstate South Carolina -- Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson, and surrounding counties -- split off to form area code 864. Nearly three decades later, growth in the Upstate pushed 864 toward exhaustion of its central office codes, and NANPA and the South Carolina Office of Regulatory Staff approved an all-services overlay: mandatory 10-digit local dialing began July 19, 2024, and overlay area code 821 entered service one month later, on August 19, 2024, covering the same footprint. That overlay eliminated the last seven-digit dialing region in South Carolina, following earlier overlays on 843 in 2015 and 803 in 2020.

The Upstate has earned the nickname "International Center of the South" for its dense concentration of foreign-owned manufacturers, led by BMW's Greer plant, opened in 1994 and the company's largest production facility worldwide by volume. The region's older "Textile Crescent" heritage in Greenville and Spartanburg has shifted toward advanced materials and technical fabrics.

Clemson University's Tigers athletics, especially football at Memorial Stadium's "Death Valley," define much of the region's identity, while Greenville's revitalized downtown around Falls Park on the Reedy and the Peace Center for the Performing Arts is often cited as a national model for post-industrial redevelopment.
