Asheville is the region's hub and largest city, and 828 remains a single, un-overlaid numbering plan area even today, though relief planning has already begun: by the mid-2020s only about 66 of 775 possible central-office-code blocks remained unassigned, and NANPA projects exhaustion by the fourth quarter of 2030, with an all-services overlay under discussion though no new code had been assigned as of the announcement.

Across its 23 counties and roughly 1.34 million residents, 828 blends mountain tourism with older manufacturing traditions:
