478 Area Code – Macon, Georgia: Location, Time Zone & History

Central Georgia's numbering history runs through two splits. In 1954, the southern part of the state broke away from area code 404 to form 912, covering both Macon and the coastal region around Savannah. Georgia's continued growth eventually made that arrangement unsustainable, and on August 1, 2000, 912 itself was divided three ways: Macon, Warner Robins, and Milledgeville became 478, Savannah and the coast kept 912, and southwest Georgia around Albany took the new code 229. Permissive dialing between the old and new codes continued for a year, through August 1, 2001.

Macon anchors a region with deep cultural roots. The city is home to The Big House, the museum dedicated to the Allman Brothers Band, who formed there in 1969, and each March it hosts the International Cherry Blossom Festival, celebrating roughly 350,000 Yoshino cherry trees planted around the city. Nearby, Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins stands as Georgia's largest industrial complex and a major regional economic anchor, reflecting the area's long ties to aerospace and defense.

The area also serves Dublin, Perry, Fort Valley, Eastman, Hawkinsville, and Swainsboro. Beyond aerospace and defense, the regional economy draws on healthcare and medical education anchored by Mercer University School of Medicine, transportation and logistics, higher education, and agriculture.
